Wade is the first person in the world to gain a hint as to how to get the prize money. He is now a quarter of the way to victory and as more of the book is read we will find out that Wade plans to use his prize money to seclude himself in space. As for relationships, there are a few important ones from newly introduced characters. The first and probably most important is the one formed between Artemis and Wade. Artemis is the online name of a player who has been helping Wade whilst also trying to get the prize for herself. The flirty back and fourth commentary between the two gives the story a little bit extra entertainment and keeps everything interesting. The second most important relationship would be between Wade and his best friend Aech. Aech, who like everyone else in this book, is also trying to find the prize. The two friends work together to figure out the clues in the riddles. The last relationship is between Wade and the IOI. The IOI is the antagonist of this book and is cheating their way to get the prize. Wade has had no encounters with them yet but they do light a bit of a flame under his ass. This in a way motivates him to work more at the prize money.

Wade Watts wakes up to gunshots whilst sleeping in the laundry room of his aunts trailer. Wade proceeds to clean up his surrounding area and narrate to us about his current situation and tell us a little bit about himself. Through this interaction we learn that he is an orphan living in a dystopian (yet realistic) version of earth in the future. Since earth has been almost destroyed by unattended oil spills and trash, the majority of the population has been living through a virtual reality called The OASIS. This VR simulation has replaced physical jobs, education, entertainment, and nearly anything else. He sits through the mandatory hours of school then plays games for the rest of the day. This is his average day until he finds out about an event to earn an insane amount of prize money.
You can infer a lot about the character and his situation by his actions. His non nonchalant response to gunshots is solid evidence that he has lived in a poor neighborhood for a while. The next obvious thing is that he sleeps in the laundry room of a trailer. These few things give me a feeling that the story will hold a rags to riches sort of theme, so my guess is that the resolution of the book will include him earning this mentioned prize money. Im really enjoying this book so far. |
